I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknow-
ledge the receipt of your letter of the 1st instant
forwarding a copy of a communication from the China
Association with regard to the closure of the British
Post Office at Tientsin.
I am to express the hope that the arrangement for
a temporary guarantee, mentioned in the letter from
the China Association may be agreed to and to state
that Sir E. Grey proposes to postpone his final re-
commendations until he has considered the despatch
from the Government of HongKong referred to in the
letter from your Department of the 12th ultimo.
